Pool service in College Station, where the water is softer than the advice assumes

Everyone says Texas water is hard. Here it is not

Almost every pool article written for Texas opens with hard water, and almost everywhere in the state that is correct. Drive twenty-five miles down to Brenham and it is very much correct. In Bryan and College Station it is wrong, and following the standard advice will slowly damage your pool.

The municipal supply here is soft. Not moderately soft, but under about a grain of hardness, which is close to the bottom of the scale for treated water in this state. It carries plenty of dissolved solids and a fair amount of sodium, so it is not stripped water, but on calcium specifically it is nearly empty.

Why empty water is not harmless water

Water low in calcium is chemically aggressive. It will pull calcium out of whatever nearby material is holding some, and in a swimming pool that means your plaster, your grout and any exposed concrete. The result is etching: a surface that roughens underfoot, grout lines that quietly recede, and plaster that ages years faster than it should.

It is slow, which is the trap. Nobody wakes up to a stained pool the way a well-water fill near Navasota will hand you overnight. It just gets a little rougher every season until resurfacing arrives earlier than it needed to.

We add calcium here instead of fighting it

In Brenham the job is keeping calcium from plating out onto surfaces. In College Station it is the reverse: putting calcium in, so the water is balanced rather than hungry. Same company, same week, opposite instruction.

• Test calcium hardness on every visit and dose calcium chloride against the reading, never by habit.
• Recheck after any significant refill, because the water going in brings almost none with it.
• Watch the saturation index as a whole rather than chasing pH on its own, since balance is what decides whether a surface is being protected or eaten.
• Flag plaster that is already etching early, while it is still a chemistry problem rather than a resurfacing quote.

Pools nobody is watching daily

A good share of our College Station work is rental and investment property around the university. Those pools behave differently from a family pool. They sit unused for stretches, then take heavy use in bursts, and there is generally nobody on site whose problem it is to notice that the water has gone cloudy.
